WHC 2011

This past weekend youngest and I headed to the New England Women's Herbal Conference.  My friend Rose joined us for the ride.  The forecast was thunderstorms the entire time.  That was not what I wanted for camping weather.  I called in the sunshine.

We left early Friday morning as the sun began to peak through.  We arrived at the camp in New Hampshire by 10 AM to a beautiful day of sunshine.  We registered, bought t-shirts and set up the tent.  We ate our picnic lunch and had time to explore before opening circle.  This was a new camp this year and it felt good to get the lay of the land before the week end kicked in.

Youngest took just as many "adult" classes as she did circle within a circle classes.  Rose loaned her a drum and she was able to take Mz Imani's class.  Latter that night and Saturday night she was able to play in the band. This was one of her highlights.  She also picked out a beautiful amethyst pendulum at the vendor booths.  Many kind souls taught her how to use it.  We had some one on one time and were able to talk.

I loved my classes as usual.  It is so inspiring to get different insights and perspectives.  I skipped one class to have a Mayan abdominal massage.  So worth it.  I really concentrated on taking better notes this year so I can go back to them later.

We left to come home Sunday at 3:30 and the rain started a few minutes later.  Perfect.  We made really good time coming home.  And while we were away hubby and son had a manly man weekend.  It involved guns, army navy stores and Hooters.   And more importantly it involved one on one time between father and son.

WHC 2010

I'm back.

The women's herbal conference was as awesome as ever. The new tent worked perfectly. The rains held off until Sunday. The girls had a great time. Both want to go back again. Oldest hooked up with friends from years past. Youngest who thought kids camp sounded babyish and boring made friends and had a great time.

I took some serious herbal classes (ones you could receiving nursing credits for), some fun classes and a wonderful hike to the heron rookery.

The caterer was new as the camp was sold last year. The food was yummy and I have a few things I plan to duplicate in the kitchen.

The music was wonderful with Katrin & Allison, Kellianna and Mz Imani. I added some new CD's to my collection.

I have a signed copy of the newest addition of Margi Flint's book. She was there with her daughter and new grandson. I have never seen such a picture of love as the three of them. They just radiated.

This is the last year at Sargeant Camp. We said our good bye's and look forward to a new camp and making some new magic.

Ready to Go

The bags are packed. The car is packed. I just need to make our lunch in the morning pack up the toiletries and we are off to the women's herbal conference.

Hubby had a meeting tonight. He was worried I might be asleep when he gets home. I am far to excited. This makes my fifth WHC. It will be oldest's 4th and youngests 1st.

The energy there is unbelievable. The high (and I'm not talking chemically induced) from the event lasts for days if not weeks.

And I'm finally caught up at work. I never recovered after April vacation before taking July. I finally have my new client on maintenance mode instead of set up. Whew! Big sigh of relief. And with four months left in the year I'm looking at how I'm going to use my PTO (paid time off) that I've saved all year.

And hubby mentioned taking just me to the Cape. He arranged for the kids and Sammy to spend the week end at Grandma's. So I need to book the hotel. We'll be going in October when the tourists are gone.

Camping Out

After the heavy, heavy rains last year at herb fest I came home and bought a new tent. The one I had been using was from high school and I couldn't stand up in it. The new one I can stand in, has more room and a porch on the front. It also said it was water proof in several different ways.

Youngest and I set it up in the yard this week end so I could see how it worked. I also wanted to test out the new air mattresses.

Youngest slept out in the tent alone last fall (in the front yard). This year she would only sleep out if I did. So, Sunday night the two of us camped out. We read by lantern light (gotta love LED's).

She's been climbing in with me at night again. It comes in spurts. I can't tell if it is because bio lied once again about visiting or if she is nervous about school starting. I know opening her locker is really worrying her. We're going to take her up before school starts and let her practice opening the locker.

And in less than two weeks I'll be at the Women's Herbal Conference with both my girls. I am so excited!!!!!!

I'm so Excited

Bouncing off the walls excited. I have been checking the website almost daily for the registration form. I e-mailed Sage Mountain and they said they would mail me one as soon as they were available. My form came yesterday. It is filled out and going in the mail tomorrow (Monday). What has me so excited - The 23rd Annual New England Women's Herbal Conference. This will be my fifth one. After my first conference (that my dear friend Rose brought me to) I vowed never to miss another one. Both girls are coming this year. They have a circle within a circle for girls 13 to 18. Oldest has participated in this the last three years. She loves it. I think these three days are the only time I ever see the REAL oldest. For girls younger than this they have a children's camp during class time. I have been selfish and refused to bring youngest so I can be fully present without worrying about watching her. She will be twelve this year and with oldest going to college next year it may be the only conference they can attend together.

I can hardly contain myself every time I think about it.

There are herbalists from around the world, great food, entertainment and music. 500 or more women come together to learn, share and celebrate.

WHC

OK, this event was just too exciting to stop blogging about. Plus, I finally downloaded all of my pictures. Did I mention that Mz. Imani became friends with the 13 indigenous grandmothers and that Flordemayo asked to come to the conference? And she was welcomed with open arms and full hearts.

Women's Herbal Conference

Yeah, I had so much fun at the conference. I have next year's dates (august 27 - 29, 2010) all blocked off. I attended my first conference four years ago and I have no intention of missing one. This year their was a record 575 women in attendance. For more info check out Sage Mountains website.

Oldest and I headed out Friday morning in the clouds. We arrived right at 10 when registration started. We set up the tent while the sun was still shining and headed for check in and to buy t-shirts. If you want a t-shirt you must arrive early and shop early (like in the first hour for any selection). T-shirts in hand we checked in and received our packet of classes for the week end. We looked over that while enjoying our picnic lunch.

Opening circle started at 1 and the first class was at 2:30. Mz. Imani was there with her drums calling us together and raising the energy.

Oldest is in "circle within a circle" for girls 13 to 18. Her classes are all planned out. Which I sometimes envy as I choose from 11 different classes each time slot. Friday I attended Love your liver with Tammi Sweet and Using Kitchen Herbs as Analogs for Wild Native Medicinal Herbs with Tammi Hartung. I've been considering taking anatomy and physiology at the community college and if Tammi Sweet taught the class I would sign up immediately. Oldest had belly dancing and the art of felting. The rain came down during the second class and dinner had to be eaten in the cafeteria instead of on the lawn but it cleared up by night fall. Dinner choices were lasagna and salmon. The nights entertainment included Katrin, Rising Appalachia and Kellianna along with Mz. Imani and the heartbeats. We were in curled up in our sleeping bags by 11. We woke to a full rainbow.

Saturday we were up early and showered. Oldest and I visited over coffee before breakfast and looked at the classes we would be taking. I took Safe Cosmetics with Susan Hoffman and learned a few new tricks to apply to my soap making, Tools of Assessment:Reading the Body with Margi Flint (I've taken this before but it is worth taking repeatedly) and Healing through Song with Cloe and Leah Smith (from Rising Appalachia). Me singing - who would have thought. Oldest had prayer bundles, hoop dancing and moon cycles. During "free" time I watched Numen:The Nature of Plants a wonderful documentary on the healing power of plants. I would highly recommend seeing it. By this point it was raining - OK torrential down pour and oldest and her friends played in the rain. The rain was a blessing to the girls visited by the henna queens as they were able to wash that henna right out of their hair from the water pouring off the roof. It was a fun show to watch. Can I say they call it free time but it is packed with dozens of options - from films, to classes, to henna to cordial tasting. After dinner and the rain subsided a little oldest and I moved our still dry sleeping bags into the car. Everything else was wet or damp and it looked like more rain was coming. We slept dry and comfy in the back of my car with plenty of room.

Saturday night was filled with music, stories and dance. It was after midnight before we crawled into the car. Sunday we were up early and started the day much the same way. Oldest was cold and decided to skip sweat lodge and attend Early Christian Mystics and their Creative Feminine Theology taught by Candis Cantin with me. While waiting for breakfast we had a wonderfully in depth conversation about religion, spirituality, beliefs. I ran into Katie who organizes circle within a circle and she commented how much oldest has opened up in the past year. The WHC is soooo sooo good for her. The sparkle in her eyes, the friends she has made. Yahoo! My last class was Signs of the Times: Astrology for Health with Phyllis Light. It was a class on folk astrology and how it is used to plant crops and aid in diagnosis. I also bought the CD for Susun Weed's class Favorite Herbs for a High Energy Life. I listened to this to and from work on Monday and loved it. They tape all of the classes. Some people use a lot of hand outs or the white board and you can miss so much. I knew Susun Weed doesn't do this and that the CD would help me make up my mind on what class to take. Oldest had their closing circle/class. Then it was lunch and closing circle. Ten minutes after we left the rain started again.

We stopped for dinner on the way home and then it was unpacking and hanging everything to dry. The ride home was filled with song as I bought the latest CD's by all the performers. This is Katrin's best CD yet. And it is Friday and I am still excited. The classes, the women, the energy is just amazing.
